Nearly every young child is distractible, impulsive, and full of energy at times, which makes ADHD one of the most over-suspected and under-diagnosed conditions in the same breath.

What clinicians actually look for

  • Symptoms present across more than one setting: home and school, not just one
  • A clear, functional impact on learning or relationships, not just a parent's preference for calmer behavior
  • Symptoms present before age 12 and persisting over time, not situational

A single hard week, or a single frustrated teacher's note, is not a diagnosis. A consistent pattern across settings and time is what warrants a formal evaluation.
